SWC Divisions

Divisions for our Sport Teams:
WHY and HOW they are determined

The South West Conference assigns each member school to one of two competitive divisions. This is done for the purpose of helping us determine the participants in our various end-of-season tournaments that will result in a team champion in each sport. In our individual sports such as wrestling, track, swim, etc. the championships are determined by an end –of-season championship event in which every single member school competes. In our team sports, the championship is determined by a championship game. Depending on the number of schools participating in the sport, our tournament may involve 8 schools, 4 schools or just two schools (football, as an example). Not only do we determine an over-all sport Champion but we also determine a Division Champion in almost all sports based on record within the division.
Because of the diversity of our Conference, and following the pattern established by the CIAC of grouping member schools by size for determination of their CIAC tournaments, the Colonial Division is the “large school” division and the Patriot Division is the “small school” division. To maintain some degree of equity, it is our practice, for every even numbered fiscal year, to review the enrollment figures published by CIAC based on the October 1 reports sent in by member schools. Those numbers allow us to rank our own member school by male and female enrollment and adjust for each sport. There are some schools, by virtue of this practice, that may be in the Colonial Division for one sport and the Patriot Division for another sport. These so called “bubble” schools shift based on the number of participating schools in each sport. Not every school has every sport and we equalize, as much as possible, the number of schools in each division. The ideal, of course, with 16 member schools is two equal divisions of 8 schools. Since this is not possible, we adjust as necessary.
