Pamela Goodpaster “Outstanding Coach Award”
Dave Jockle
The South-West Conference is pleased to present its Pamela Goodpaster “Outstanding Coach Award” to David Jockle of Bunnell High School. A graduate of Chaminade High School on Long Island and Fairfield University and current social studies teacher at Bunnell, Dave served as Head Girl’s Volleyball Coach at Bunnell for sixteen seasons (1993-2009). During his tenure, the Lady Bulldogs compiled an overall record of 309 wins and 65 losses and won four CIAC state championships, eight SWC championships and nine SWC division titles. He led Bunnell to its first state title in 2001 when the Lady Bulldogs won the Class L championship. Bunnell captured three consecutive Class LL titles in 2004, 2005 and 2006. His 2004 and 2006 volleyball teams each finished 25-0 and were ranked number one in Connecticut.
As a tribute to his coaching prowess, Dave was named the Connecticut Post “Coach of the Year” in 2001, 2004, 2005 and 2006. He was the New Haven Register’s “Coach of the Year’ in 2001 and 2006. The CHSCA bestowed its prestigious “Outstanding Volleyball Coach of the Year” recognition on him in 2007. He was inducted into the Bunnell High School Athletics Hall of Fame in 2008 and the Connecticut Women’s Volleyball Association Hall of Fame in 2011. Over thirty of his players have gone on to compete in college. Three of his student-athletes were named Gatorade “State Players of the Year”.
Although Dave’s teams were marked with extraordinary success on the court as evidenced by the skill and determination of his players and the team’s won-lost record, Dave’s legacy as a coach is best noted by the grace and dignity by which he and his players carried themselves on and off the court. Dave Jockle earned the respect and admiration of his colleagues for his unwavering commitment to good sportsmanship and fair play. In fact, Dave’s teams were recognized for outstanding sportsmanship on three occasions; twice by the SWC (2006 and 2007) and once by the Fairfield County Volleyball Officials (1996).
